Monday Mix: Social Media News You May Have Missed

Last week brought many social media updates, most of them from Facebook. Read up on everything new at Facebook and Instagram, below:

  • Facebook To Reduce Overly Promotional Page Posts in News Feed: Facebook will begin to reduce the amount of promotional Page posts people see in their news feed starting in 2015. The change will include pages people have indicated they like. The reason for change is due to user feedback from a survey conducted by Facebook.
  • Facebook Launches New Tool to Help Users Understand Privacy Policies and Controls: Facebook introduced Privacy Basics, an interactive guide that provides answers to the most commonly asked privacy control questions. Privacy Basics provides useful tips in language that is easy to understand and is also available in 36 languages.
  • Instagram Updates Explore Feature and Adds Caption Editing: Instagram added two updates last week: a revamp ofit’s Explore feature and caption editing. The first notable change to Explore is in the change of its icon to a magnifying glass. The second change, is the addition of two tabs – Photos and People – designed to make it easier to find interesting content. Users, however, will most likely be excited about caption editing, a feature previously unavailable. Comment editing is available via the ellipsis underneath an image.
  • Facebook Introduces Say Thanks: Facebook unveiled “Say Thanks,” a new tool that creates thank you videos for anyone you wish to thank. The tool lets users select a theme and images, write a special message, and preview and edit their video until it’s just right. Completed thank you videos can be sent to friends on a user’s friend list. Sent videos will appear on both the giver and recipient’s Timeline.
